Kerbo Charge Welcomes £25 Million Government Boost for On-Street EV Charging
Kerbo Charge Co-Founders Ben Whitaker and Michael Goulden
Kerbo Charge is delighted to share some monumental news that's set to accelerate tens of thousands of UK households going electric!
The Government has just committed £25 million in funding specifically for cross-pavement charging solutions, a huge step forward that puts Kerbo Charge right at the heart of making home EV charging accessible to all.
For far too long, over 40% of UK homes have faced a barrier to EV ownership simply because they don't have a driveway.
This has left many potential EV drivers with limited options, such as paying high prices at inconvenient public charging points or sticking with polluting petrol and diesel cars, which contribute directly to the climate emergency.
This vital funding from the Government directly addresses that challenge.
Unlocking Home EV Charging for Homes Without Driveways
Currently, Kerbo Charge alone have seen the immense demand firsthand – we have a waiting list of 12,000 drivers all desperate to have one of our channels installed outside their homes.
These drivers have often been restricted by affordability or by their local authority, which has yet to authorise the simple cross-channel installations.
This new funding changes everything, demonstrating the Government’s strong backing for cross-pavement charging solutions like ours and directly subsidising the cost for tens of thousands of UK households.
The Benefits of the Kerbo Charge System
Here's what makes it unique and why this funding is so crucial:
✅ Enable Affordable Home Charging: Home charging is significantly more affordable than public points. While public 'slow/fast' chargers average 51p/kWh, residents can charge at home for around 7p/kWh, saving roughly £22 per single charge. This funding helps reduce the upfront installation cost, making these savings accessible to thousands more.
✅ Safe for pedestrians – even in busy areas: The specially-designed lid closes behind the cable like a zip, drastically reducing trip hazards. Our channel sits flush with the pavement and flexes to match uneven surfaces, eliminating gaps that rigid covers cannot, allowing wheelchair users, prams and mobility walkers to pass over easily. It's also been rigorously tested for high slip resistance and is certified to high safety standards (EN-16165 and BS EN 1433:2002 (C250 class)).
✅ Built to Last & UK Manufactured: Our durable channel is manufactured in a BSI ISO 9001:2015-certified facility in Derbyshire, England, ensuring top-quality standards.
✅ Ultra-fast install: Typically takes about one hour, minimising disruption and blending seamlessly into the street's infrastructure.
A Growing National Movement & Strong Partnerships
The demand is clear, and we're already working closely with councils nationwide. Over 600 Kerbo Charge channels have been installed across 30 UK local authorities, with 10 of these already making it available to all residents.
This includes councils such as West Berkshire, Milton Keynes, Cornwall, Reading, and the London Borough of Enfield, with feedback from both residents and councils being overwhelmingly positive; over 80% of trialling councils have placed additional orders.
Our innovative solution also caught the eye of Deborah Meaden on BBC’s Dragons’ Den, securing a £50,000 investment in 2024.
Deborah says: “This is brilliant news for UK residents with on-street parking as it makes home charging much more accessible and affordable – and tackles the current inequality between those with and without driveways. I invested in Kerbo Charge because I saw a big problem that needed to be solved – how residents without driveways will charge their EVs – and I’m delighted to see the Government supporting this new technology and helping accelerate EV adoption”.
Supporting the Future of Smart Energy.
Beyond convenience and safety, Kerbo Charge is designed to be future-proof. Our channels can support thicker 20mm cables, making them compatible with emerging Vehicle-to-Home and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2X) technologies. This is about more than just charging; it's about enabling a more sustainable energy future.
